The coronavirus disease COVID-19 is an infectious disease that is triggered by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The COVID-19 rapid antigen test provides direct evidence of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection within 15 minutes within the first two weeks after the onset of symptoms.

The Covid-19 test detects the virus directly and is therefore suitable for early detection. Similar to the PCR test, samples are taken with a nasopharyngeal swab or throat swab. However, the sample does not need to be tested in a laboratory. This saves a lot of time, as there is no need to transport and evaluate the sample in the laboratory. Submitting the results is also time-consuming. This is also not necessary with the rapid antigen test. The rapid antigen test can be carried out by medical specialists from any location. Acute infection with SARS-CoV-2 can be detected after just 15 minutes.

The COVID-19 antigen rapid test has a CE certification and can be carried out by medical specialists regardless of location using a nasopharyngeal or oropharynx swab.

The Covid Antigen Test is on the BfArM list for direct pathogen detection of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 on the BfArM website.

What are the advantages of an antigen test for SARS-CoV-2?

  • Testing of an acute infection with SARS-CoV-2
  • The quick result within 15 minutes
  • Evaluation regardless of location, without a laboratory
  • CE certified
  • Relative sensitivity (94.55%)
  • Relative specificity (100%)

How does the antigen test work?

The COVID-19 antigen rapid test detects viral SARS-CoV-2 antigens through visual interpretation of a color development. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are bound on the test region of the nitrocellulose membrane. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies conjugated with colored particles are bound on the conjugated pad. A sample is added to the extraction buffer, which is optimized so that it releases the SARS-CoV-2 antigens from the sample.

During the test, the extracted antigens combine with the anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, which are conjugated with colored particles. While the sample moves along the strip due to the capillary effect and interacts with reagents on the membrane, the complex is detected by the anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the test area. Excess colored particles are recorded in the internal control zone.

The presence of a colored stripe in the test area indicates a positive result for SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens, while its absence indicates a negative result. A colored stripe in the control area acts as a procedural control and indicates that the correct volume of sample has been added and has completely penetrated the membrane.

Samples can be taken either by a swab from the nasopharyngeal space (nasopharyngeal) or a swab from the oropharyngeal space (oropharyngeal).

Nasopharyngeal smear (smear from the nasopharynx):

1) Remove the swab from its packaging.
2) Insert the swab into the nostril parallel to the roof of your mouth. Rotate it against the nasal wall (to make sure the swab contains both cells and mucus).
3) Process the swab as soon as possible after collecting the specimen

Oropharyngeal smear (smear from the mouth and throat):

1) Remove the swab from its packaging.
2) Insert the swab completely from the mouth into the throat, center it on the red part of the pharynx wall and mandibular tonsils, and rub it lightly on the bilateral pharyngeal tonsils and the pharynx wall. Avoid touching the tongue with the swab and remove it.
3) Process the swab as soon as possible after collecting the specimen

How sure is the result?

Relative sensitivity: 94.55% (83.93% ~ 98.58%) *

Relative specificity: 100% (97.1% ~ 100%) *

* 95% confidence interval
